This place is tasty, I've had their smoked lamb pita sandwich it's a really good American take on the gyro. all the sides I've tried are good, their sauces are tasty and so are their wings, and they have interesting specials like red neck nachos...however all that being said the prime rib sandwich is amazing! tender sliced prime rib and a perfect horse radish sauce, so good it just made my day! I like this place I will keep coming back. The people are nice. The old school country music is a crack up. The decor is a little intense but whatever, they have Kodiac Cola.

This place is FANTASTIC! A true gem . My family and I had the Brisket, pulled chicken and even smoked lamb! Everything was delicious! The sides are equally impressive, from the okra to the sweet potato fries. Best BBQ in the area for sure! Great food and friendly people, you can't go wrong.

Everything about this place is awesome. The story behind it, the food, and the extremely kind people that own it and work here. I had the pulled chicken sandwich which was just the right amount of smokey. The fried okra and greens were fantastic. Don't forget to try the ice cream! I highly recommend this place!

Great little BBQ joint in Tarpon Springs, of all places! It's got the feel of a real Texas joint, without the swagger. Craig is a quiet guy who seems to really enjoy his craft. I highly recommend trying this place out.

Great barbecue place with patriotic support. Really nice owners, casual location that was formerly a convenience store. My husband eats here about once a week and gets the North Carolina style pulled pork sandwich every time. I have had their pork as well and it's very tasty. I discovered on one occasion that this place also makes really tasty catfish. Very pleasant surprise if you don't want barbecue!

Sauce was really good, I got pulled chicken, which was chicken chunks not really pulled, but the sauce made the meal. My wife got pulled pork, much better option. Pick up food at window, cooks seemed a bit salty but not anything crazy.

I ordered the beef brisket with sweet tater fries and collard greens. The brisket was cut well, tender, juicy and had great flavor. The sweet and spicy Bar-B-Que sauce on the table was a great compliment to the meat. The ruffled cut sweet potatoes were great on their own, but the "sweet" caramel sauce served with the fries was too sweet and unnecessary. The collard greens were too bitter fort taste. The cornbread was delicious! I would give them another chance, but order different sides :)

We had the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich. Perfect! The okra was hot out of the frier and it was delicious. This is definitely on the list of places we'll go back to as soon as we can.

We only had the pulled smoked chicken, which was not pulled and not smoked. It seems like it was simmered in a mild barbecue sauce. Chunks of thigh meat. Fresh, somewhat tasty, but not at all what I expected. This would be a place for a beef eater, which I am not. If you are squeamish about insane right wing politics and religion, don't come in here. These are friendly people who love their guns. I have never seen so many Duck Dynasty centerfolds.

If you enjoy a very fatty slice of brisket this is for you! Ours was not edible. Just like a slab of fat. Fries were eh. VERY overpriced for what it is. I'm sorry! I did enjoy seeing all of the military memorabilia.

The best barbecue I have found in Tampa area. I read reviews or individuals indicate there's too much smoke, that is what true barbecue is based upon. It's the first location that I found that actually had a quality tasting smoke. The brisket was outstanding was outstanding, but surprisingly I think I found the chicken the best of all. I am not that much of a pork fan and would probably rate ot third in the order. The brisket had a beautiful pink smoke ring on it. I'll be back.

This place is, hands down, the best bbq we have ever had! We did a sampler platter and there was so much food, we couldn't eat it all and took a bunch home. Everything was perfectly cooked, moist, smoked to perfection! We've had a lot of bbq...this place is the go-to place! The owner is an absolutely wonderful individual and we will be back for more next time we're in the area!

Hands down the best BBQ joint in the area. I've been coming down for years to visit my Mom and I always try to look for a good place for BBQ. Nothing in the area compares to this place. Both in food and customer service. The brisket was perfect and the owner seemed really appreciative with his customers. They have a really good selection of meats (going to try the lamb next time) and the sauces are pretty good too. Definitely making this my "go to" place next time I'm in town. (I probably shouldn't say this, but they need to charge more :) )

So-so bbq...very nice people though. Waited 30 min for 2 pull pork sandwiches ( they have a sign so it must be normal) ...ordered one large...the only thing larger about it from the regular was the bun size....small portions all the way around. The bbq is good..ill go back and try again. If your in largo try smokin rib shack on west bay...order the cdub sandwich..it feeds two people and is awesome bbq.

Awesome sauces and sides almost compete with the bbq. Pulled chicken is the best, all meat, no weird "parts". Kids love the mac and cheese. Someday i hope to have room for dessert!

  • Craig G.

Great food, and incredible service. Craig the owner, actually comes around and talks to you - makes me remember how service was "in the good old days" when owners actually cared about their customers and showed you they cared. All the staff makes you feel welcome and the food is great!

We had the pulled pork sandwhich and half chicken for lunch - both were very good! Great portion size, fun atmosphere, and loved the different sauces. To finish it off we had bread pudding and a brownie sundae, both delicious. The bread pudding had an amazing rum sauce that really brought out the flavor. We'll definitely be back!

Edited review: I stopped in for lunch and found a nice environment, friendly service, and had a great "Carolina BBQ" sandwich. I'd originally rated it 5 stars based on that. I then went for dinner with a friend; we both agreed that the food was good, but the portion size slid it over into a "not a good value" category. A medium pile of pulled pork, and a small (1/2 cup?) sized dish of cole slaw, and a 1/3 cup of collard greens for $12 is pretty expensive. My friend had ribs, and got served 4 (for $14, I believe). Add a couple of iced teas, and we were at a $36 meal, with tip. That was just too much for what we got, and where we had it.

Craig Gross, the owner, has gone all out to make the best BBQ in town! The beef brisket is my fav, and the alligator bites are definitely worth trying. I love BBQ and have tried many places in Tampa, and this is in my top 2. Craig is always there, running between the kitchen helping with the cooking, the smoker out front, and talking with guests to make sure they have a good experience. The theme of the restaurant is military based with much memorabilia adorning the walls, including a pic of his son who was KIA in Afghanistan. I have already been there 3 times and will definitely be going back!

Always good homemade tasting bbq, service member discount and nice atmosphere. Full range of menu items with extras like corn nuggets and stew. Everything is slightly above average except the smoked prime rib, it's way better then I make lol. Seriously the smoked shaved prime rib is my new favorite. I like to buy it by the pound to use as lunch meat. Sure beats that fake, waterlogged deli meat.

I was visiting my mother who lives nearby. We passed this a few times in our travels. She indicated the food as good. The problem was that we had our meals planned and there wasn't really time to dine. Then I decided we could get something to have for breakfast! This, I believe, was a former convenience store. It was that look. The help was most friendly. We ordered a pound of brisket. We waited a few minutes for it to be ready. The place seemed clean. There was plenty of customers during our time there. We got our food and headed home. I tasted a piece before putting it in the fridge for the evening. It tasted just fine. The thing is, the brisket was cut with the grain, not against it. The meat had an odd look to it. The following morning we reheated the brisket and had it with eggs and some spinach. The brisket was properly cooked. It is tasty. I just don't understand why it was sliced as it was. I will dine here again next time I am in the area.

We found this place on groupon, awesome deal. The prices were awesome anyways but the groupon deal was even better. You order as soon as you walk in and then find your seat. The night we went, they had run out of chicken so we both ended up having ribs. Brandon had a combo which included ribs, pulled pork, two sides and chili and corn bread... Wow right? I just had ribs with sides and corn bread for my meal. The corn bread was to die for and seriously my favorite part. Brandon on the other hand loved and I mean loved the ribs. He said they were the best ribs he's ever had in the state of Florida! The owner had come around and was talking to us about our meal and the restaurant, he seemed very involved and excited about his establishment. We literally cannot wait to make the drive back up to tarpon to try this place again.

Great BBQ. The owner is really interested in making sure his food is good and it shows. Baby back ribs were very tender and the brisket was like butter. The Boston baked beans were great as well. Home made bread pudding sealed the deal.

If you love BBQ, you'll love Frankie's. I love the pulled pork platter or sandwich. Their cornbread is moist and yummy. The platter is a lot of food.

Brisket is excellent . I have been searching for Brunswick Stew and here it is! I am coming back tomorrow. The place feels like you are somewhere in Georgia or South Carolina. It is much cleaner than most restaurants. I like that. Ok I went back today and the ribs are just as good. These are friendly people that show their pride in America and our Armed Forces. You should see some of the military memorabilia. I particularly enjoyed the model air planes suspended from the ceiling. Just like my bedroom when I was a kid. My son wants to return tomorrow.

Their BBQ was good and they amazed me by having fried okra which I could not find in anywhere. They just really fried them for my order. Sooooo impressive! My only one thing that I do not know if anybody would have said or not would be the restaurant was a little depressing. As a daughter of the proud soldier I always touched with the pictures and everything about the war. I was almost cry with one of the frames around the restaurant.

We only had the pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, but they were awesome! The pork was slightly moist (not runny like most places pulled pork), seasoned well, and moderately lean. I hate pulled pork with a lot of fat. The baked beans were also excellent. Prices are definitely reasonable, and they support the family of a soldier. -Kyle, USAF

Amazing smoker, bar-b-que sauce and hospitality. We felt like were regulars, the owner/manager made sure we had everything we wanted.

I read the good reviews, and initially I liked the patriotic theme. It was nice that there was a memorial picture of a soldier family member on the wall, but all the other military themed stuff was a bit much. The fluorescent lighting was harsh, and the benches uncomfortable. The food is served in grubby worn out plastic baskets, and on paper. At these prices, I would have preferred dishes and not plastic cups and greasy gooey paper. The server was nice, so I was hopeful. I ordered the ribs, and they came out burnt to a crisp. They were black and completely inedible. The sides were blah, the mushy potato salad just bland yuck. When I explained the problem to the server, she asked what else could she bring. I asked for chicken, but only if it was not burned. When it came out, it too was burnt black and dry as wood. Also totally inedible. I gave it back to her as my companion choked down some of her sawdust-dry burnt pulled pork. She had to douse it with bbq sauce, which was also not good. I told the server I didn't want any more burnt food, but she insisted I give it a third try, and that she would see to it herself the chicken would be moist and not incinerated. Again, out came a charred clump of inedible black crud, very obviously unfit for consumption. I couldn't take anymore. I got up to leave and pay for what my companion consumed and our drinks. I'm giving this place two stars instead of just one, because at least the server comped the entire check. I sincerely hope they were only having a bad day when they burned everything up. I could tell the other diners were unhappy, too, as they nibbled at what they could. What was disturbing to me, and why I won't go back, is because obviously the cook and the server think that black dry charcoal is fit to serve. And the plain hard benches, wall clutter, plastic baskets and harsh lighting don't help the dining experience either. If you go, before you order, take a look at the seated diners and see if they are unhappy and gagging.

place is a joke and the owner has been capitalizing on his son's service in the Military. Of course for the record we all thank our military for serving our great country and people. Now, the BBQ, sucks and expensive and just bad service, legion hall layout with dirty tables, tasteless burnt food, over minced not sliced beef or pork just plain mush. I hate this joint, the service, the food and now the owner.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but the parking lot was full so that's got to be a good sign, right? When we stepped in, we found out you put your order in first, before you sit down. Given that they were so busy, and it was an hour before closing, their ordering board said they were out of a few things. That's ok. We could work around that. We placed our orders, I got a pulled pork combo, and my husband ordered a ribs combo, both of us would get our meat plus 2 sides for $11 or $13 with cornbread. Not a bad price really, just a bit over average. Once our order was placed, we walked into the small seating area and waited. .. And waited.. And waited. As I mentioned it was packed in the parking lot, and so it was packed inside. When we sat, they were calling #96, our ticket was #107 so we knew we'd be waiting for a while. Time passed slowly, the husband and I chatting quietly, taking a look at the people around us plates, when I noticed one lady had just gotten her hush puppies, she must have had about 10 on her plate. I told her how good they looked and she offered me one. I politely declined, but I really thought that was nice. As we were waiting, the woman who took our order came around to several of the waiting orders and told them that they were out of ribs. She finally came to us and told the husband that they were out of ribs and would he rather a different meat. He chose brisket, he was fine with that. When it was time to pick up our plate we were doubly surprised! The serving size of the sides were huge (Unless you got the onion rings, you only get 4) and he got Ribs. Apparently they found the last order of them. This kind of made the lady who was sitting near us upset as she too, had ordered ribs and ended up getting prime rib. She was not a happy camper. The food itself was good. There were 3 different sauces offered. One was very sweet, with a hint of Maple. The next one was kind of sweet but much more smoky and the last was smoky with a lot of heat. I liked the smoky one and the Hubby prefers the hot one. The pulled pork was well smoked and very flavourful, the potato salad had a *special ingredient* that added some zip to it and made it unforgettable. While the fried okra that the husband had was very tasty as was the coleslaw. What I was really surprised to see was that you couldn't get either Coke Or Pepsi there, but rather Kodiak soda, I've never heard of this brand but people seemed to like it. They also had unsweetened flavoured teas to try. We will certainly try this place again when there isn't a groupon out, and have a better chance of trying everything we really want to. I guess you can't fault a place for being popular, and having to turn customers away by telling them "I'm sorry, we've run out of food!"

Fount the ribs so tough we couldn't pull them off the bone. Sides were small. Could not get a coke or pepsi only unknown brand drinks. Not impressed.

I stopped of at the USO in Tampa International Airport this past Friday and Frankie's was set up providing free meals to service members and their families. I had a pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw, outstanding. I'll make a point of visiting the restaurant next time I'm in town. Thanks!

We got a groupon and I am a huge BBQ person being from ST Louis. I must say the Pulled pork was excellent. I was very disappointed in the bread pudding. It was soupy not firm like a bread pudding should be. I'm not sure but i think they use Sweet baby rays with there seasoning in it. Which is fine cause i love SBR but its kinda false advertisement. Love the decor and it wasn't bad i will go back to try the beef. and report

BBQ is an essential food group. This place has mastered it. They have southern style and North Carolina style BBQ. I have never been to a restaurant that had both styles that both tasted delicious. I drove over 30 minutes for this place. And it was worth every minute of the drive. I took my food critic neighbor with me who is from North Carolina and has to fly up once a year to get his North Carolina BBQ fix. After eating here, he no longer has to make that trip. The North Carolina BBQ tasted just as it does at a local restaurant in a small town up north. I chose the southern BBQ and finished every bite. The staff was very friendly and helpful and we even got to meet and talk with the two owners. Craig had to leave us though - he was smoking and BBQing meat as we ate! The restaurant is family owned and their son who lost his life defending our country is proudly displayed in this American family owned restaurant. Any person in the military gets a discount when dining here.

Ordered 2 Carolina pulled pork sandwiches with fries, onion rings, and bread pudding for pick up. Waited behind a couple who couldn't decided on what they wanted, how to use a Groupon coupon, and other issues??? Apparently, the cashier couldn't give me the food and me pay for it quickly while they figured things out. They really need to speed up the call in orders. The BBQ pork was dry and tough and nothing special. Serving size was smaller than other BBQ places. Used the sauces to liven it up. You get two small cups of sauce per sandwich. If you want more you need to buy a pint according to the cashier. Second time having the pulled pork here and it was the same the first time. I won't get it again. Due to the wait to get the food, the fries were cold after a three mile drive back to the house. Onion rings were great and the bread pudding was good. Location is great...away from busy HWY19. Nice people but I can't give this experience a higher rating.

Wow! Great BBQ and atmosphere. Decor and patronage goes towards the owner's son whose life was lost in the war. Great. Great. Great! Try all three sauces. Craig's is my favorite on brisket and ribs.

I'm glad I had a coupon. We ordered 2 platters. One platter was ribs and the other was brisket. We picked up our food at the counter. All the sides were in one basket and the ribs and brisket were in another basket. The basket with the meat had 3 ribs and 4 slices of brisket. I thought they had made a mistake because there was hardly any meat. I got up and asked the cashier to take a look. She advised me that was the correct amount. If I hadn't had a coupon both meals with 2 sides would have cost $28. I was shocked at the portion size. The food was OK. I'm confused on the previous review stating how much food they got and how good it was. It was average BBQ with very small portions. I would not go back or recommend this restaurant.

Arrived on Saturday afternoon. The owner I believe he told my wife that he did not have salads because he bought the fixings but only sold a couple. His attitude I would consider very terse. Ordered a rack of ribs , beans and okra. The soft drink was not a known brand of lemonade which virtually tasteless. The ribs which was a rack was individually cut up which I have never seen before that way. How do you know you are getting a full rack. The beans looked like they just came out of a can and no real taste to them. The okra I am sure was not fresh but came from a frozen package. My wife was not use to Carolina BBQ which is a dry rub and you add sauce. I am from the Midwest and used to KC BBQ. One sauce was acceptable, the other was watery and tasteless, and the did not try the hot sauce. Overall the food was terrible and within an hour of eating there we were both sick. Pepto for both of us. I am a Vet and respect his son's service. But the owner needs to make this place more customer friendly and not like an American Legion Post bar & restaurant. Will not be coming back!

One word AMAZING! The beef brisket, melts in your mouth. Our 90 year old father said " the brisket was so easy to eat"! Highest quailty of meat. Great atompsphere for family. Warm and welcoming management. Especially heart warming is the resturant 's theme saluting men and women who serve and who lost their life for our country. Frankie's was one of those men who served and lost his life. Thank you Frankie's BBQ for the GREAT food. Can't forget the desert!!! Fresh strawberry short cake.

  • Donna B.

Today my husband and I ordered a full rack of the ribs with two sides. The ribs we were served were extremely fatty and were not tender at all. The first rib I bit into looked pink and I asked my husband if it was fully cooked. I also questioned whether the ribs were pork? I have eaten a lot of delicious ribs and these were really bad. Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed. We feel we wasted $30 on sub-standard food. The theme of the restaurant is great, but unfortunately the food was not.
